Located on the South Mountain Plateau near Blue Ridge Summit, Happel’s Meadow Wetland Preserve in Blue Ridge Summit, PA, is an 85-acre mountaintop ecosystem featuring shrub swamps, grass marshes, and wetland forests. Home to over 230 plant species, 80 bird species, 120 fungi species, and diverse invertebrates, the Preserve focuses on conservation, biodiversity, and education. Volunteers are essential for trail maintenance, outreach, fundraising, and field studies. Recreational opportunities include gentle walking trails and birdwatching. The Preserve is home to 197 species of native plants, including the hard-to-find rosebay rhododendron (R. maximum) and several orchids.
Volunteer mycologists are needed to collect samples for DNA analysis to help identify plants and fungi in the Preserve. Additionally, volunteers are needed for educational field studies to identify more plants and animals.
