Under construction. The Happel’s Meadow Wetland Preserve will be revising this template borrowed from another local attraction to reflect the wonderful ecological, geological and historical features of Happel’s Meadow Wetlands. Stay tuned for more.
Blue Ridge Summit. 9/2025. Happel’s Meadow Wetland Preserve is dedicated to conserving and enhancing its diverse ecosystems, including shrub swamps, grass marshes, and wetland forests. Located approximately 6 miles east of Waynesboro, PA, the preserve offers mulched walking trails for recreation, birdwatching, and environmental observation. It is home to over 230 plant species, 77 bird species, 35 invertebrate categories, and 120 fungi species, including rare native plants like the rosebay rhododendron and orchids.
The preserve has a rich history, dating back to the 1700s when it was known as Bear Swamp. In the late 1800s, Blue Ridge Summit became a tourist destination and Bear Swamp became a productive farm, before transitioning to conservation under Washington Township in 1990. Volunteers and partners, including students, professionals, and community groups, contribute to its mission through outreach, biodiversity restoration, and educational events.
Happel’s Meadow is looking for volunteers with skills in art, fundraising, public relations, trail management, environmental analysis, and historical research.
